SUMMER FESTIVAL of LEARNING
July 6-30, 2021
Explore Summer Festival of Learning
Pinewood's two- or four-week program offers half-day or full-day options in both academic and enrichment classes designed to meet the needs of a variety of students. Specialized teachers and small academic classes maximize the summer school experience. Our curriculum emphasizes academic achievement as well as participation in the arts, technology, and athletics.
This year our on-campus program will be organized in accordance to current county Covid-19 regulations. Therefore, Grades K-6 will be grouped in cohorts approximately 10-14 students and will be taught by specialized teachers. Grades 7 & 8 will also have specialized teachers, small classes, and will follow Covid-19 regulations for middle school. Multiple class and other options that we were able to offer in the past will be more limited this year. If regulations ease, then options may increase.
Remote Learning classes also available for Grades 5-8.

For students who will be entering Kindergarten in fall of 2021
Grades K-2 will meet at Pinewood's Lower Campus (477 Fremont Avenue, Los Altos).
4-Week Program | July 6-30
Morning
The Kindergarten program strengthens foundational skills that foster confidence and enthusiasm to start kindergarten that include active listening, following directions, increased attention span, vocabulary, working collaboratively and respectfully with others, communicating confidently and clearly, and a sense of curiosity and inquiry.
In the Kindergarten Workshop, experienced teachers teach only their favorite subject area. Each student in the small academic groups is assessed and the teacher gears learning activities accordingly.
Eligibility: Students enrolled in the program must be fluent in English and be five years old by September 1, 2021.
Each day from 8:25 am - 12:30 pm, the children will enjoy the following classes:
Language Arts Foundation (Spelling, Reading, Oral Communication)
Multi-sensory activities help children learn the symbols and the sounds of the most frequently used phonemes. Printing the letters with proper formation and spacing also serves as a kinesthetic tool to help master phoneme recognition. Phonemic awareness activities (separating and blending individual sounds in words and naming beginning, middle, and ending sounds) are a point of emphasis. This is reading! In addition to building reading skills, the teacher will read stories from the best of children’s literature. Classes are small, enabling close attention by teachers to assess and address individual student understanding.
Math Basics
Children will feel prepared and excited to start their Kindergarten year after developing number sense, learning to recognize and form numbers and shapes, and counting and adding using hands-on activities and manipulatives. Math games and math-focused stories increase enjoyment. Each student receives consistent individual attention in our small classes with experienced, skillful teachers.
Music and Drama Showtime
Love and learn music and drama through activities and games. Increase self-confidence and communication skills while preparing for an energetic show. Final performance for family and friends will ether be by video or live during the last week of school.
Art Factory
Explore a variety of artistic mediums and techniques for self-expression. Learn about creativity, produce art projects, and be introduced to the works of some of the world’s greatest artists.
Body Works
Develop fitness through games and athletics that emphasize sportsmanship and skill development.
Science Discovery (for two weeks only)

What is the difference in content between the four-week morning program and two-week morning program?
For Grades K-6, the four-week program covers approximately double the curriculum than the two-week program. Also, some classes are only available in the four-week program such as Curtain Time!, Language Arts Essentials, and Math Mastery.
For Grades 7 and 8, your child will have more class options to choose from in the four-week program versus the two-week program. In addition, the following classes are only offered as a four-week option: Grammar Skills Refined, Pre-Algebra Prep, Algebra Prep, and On Stage!
What time do the campuses open and close?
What requirements do you have for students to attend?
What are your class sizes?
Who are your teachers?
I have children registered at different campuses. How will I be able to drop-off and pick-up at the same time?
The Lower Campus (Grades K, 1, and Grade 2 TWO-Week Program) and Middle Campus (Grades 3, 4 and Grade 2 FOUR-Week Program) are a few blocks away on Fremont Ave in Los Altos. The Upper Campus (Grades 5-8) is about 3 miles away from the other two campus on Fremont Rd in Los Altos Hills.
Drop Off: All campuses open 25 minutes before the start of school so you can stagger your drop-off time. If you have a Lower Campus student, we recommend dropping off your younger student first since we have a singing assembly that begins at 8:15am.
Pick-Up: Dismissal runs for approximately 10-15 minutes so there is some flexibility when picking up children at multiple campuses.
How much homework do the academic classes have in the morning program?
The classes that indicate "daily homework" in the class descriptions will have approximately 20 minutes (Grades 1-5) or 30 minutes (Grades 6-8) per class depending on the pace of the student. For Grades 7-8, there are several classes with daily homework. We recommend a healthy balance of academic and enrichment classes and suggest that parents consider limiting the number of "daily homework" academic classes.
Can I request that my child be put in the same class as another child?
Yes, you can indicate your friend request at the bottom of the registration form under "Comments or Requests." Grades K-6 will be organized by cohorts, so in order for us to be able to accommodate the friend request, both students need to register for the same grade, the same session(4wk session or one of the 2wk sessions), the same dismissal option, and the same type of language arts and math class. For Grades 7 & 8, students need to choose the same session and several of the same classes.
If my child is registered for an Afternoon Festival pickup time of 3:00pm, is it possible to register for a 5:00pm pickup on a particular day?
When is my tuition balance due and how do I pay it?
Tuition balance is due by credit card before June 1, 2021 via the Tuition Balance Form. An email reminder will be sent on May 1. There is also an option to pay in full during registration.
Can I get a prorated rate if my child is absent for part of the morning program?
What do I do if I need to cancel or adjust my registration?
For cancellations, contact Barbara Hantke in the Business Office. For program adjustments, contact Heather McCauley, Summer Festival of Learning Director.
