Nurturing Confident, Compassionate Individuals
Social-Emotional Learning
Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) is more than just a curriculum at Pinewood—it's a reflection of our long-standing commitment to nurturing students who are not only academically strong but also emotionally resilient. From our earliest days, we've recognized the importance of helping students develop the skills they need to thrive in all areas of life. SEL is woven into our daily practices, guiding students as they grow into well-rounded individuals who are ready to meet life's challenges with confidence and empathy.
Laying the Foundation with Kimochis
Grades K-2
For our youngest students, SEL begins with the Kimochis program. This engaging curriculum introduces children to the world of emotions, helping them understand and express their feelings in a healthy way. Through Kimochis, our students learn the basics of empathy, kindness, and positive social interaction—skills that have been part of Pinewood's educational fabric since our founding. By starting early, we ensure that even our youngest learners are building a strong foundation for their future emotional and social development.
Building Resilience with Wayfinder
Grades 3-6
As students move into grades 3-6, our SEL program evolves with the Wayfinder curriculum. This research-based approach deepens their self-awareness, resilience, and relationship skills, reflecting Pinewood’s enduring values of personal growth and community involvement. Wayfinder helps students navigate the social challenges they encounter, set meaningful goals, and actively contribute to their community. Weekly assemblies provide opportunities for students to come together, reinforcing the importance of connection—a principle that has been central to Pinewood’s story from the beginning.
Strengthening Bonds through Community Days
Grades 7-12
In junior high and high school, SEL at Pinewood focuses on fostering strong bonds and shared values among students and teachers. Regular community days are dedicated to activities that build trust, communication, and mutual respect, preparing students for life beyond school. These practices continue Pinewood’s tradition of creating a supportive environment where every student is seen, known, and valued.
