Take a Seat, Homer

Students began their semester in Design and Engineering class with an introduction to the design-thinking process. Our students' first task was to use rapid ideation to create a chair for a specific character from The Simpsons. Working in groups, they began by listing several features of the chair and then were given one minute to sketch each of their four designs. The following week's activity was to use rapid prototyping to bring their designs to life. Their materials for each timed round were: paper and tape, pipe cleaners, toothpicks and marshmallows, and modeling clay.
