Creating Your Story

This week, author/illustrator Nathan Hale delighted our three campuses with his second visit to Pinewood in two years. Known best for his #1 New York Times bestselling historical series, Hazardous Tales, Hale has authored and illustrated dozens of books for children and teens.

Hale animates in real time as he speaks, his constantly-evolving illustration projected on a large screen behind him. Our students listen with absolute focus, delighted by the drawings that came to life before their eyes. They gasp, gawk, and giggle at each twist and turn in Hale's stories. Our students, faculty, and staff who have had the opportunity to attend Hale's fun-filled presentations will tell you that he has an incredible ability to engage his audience, pulling them deep into fascinating historical tales and their own imaginative minds.

During his time at Lower Campus, Hale shared little-known true tale from history and guided them through a story-creation exercise of their own. At Upper Campus, Hale shared with our junior high and high school students the story of how he got to be where he is today. The secret to getting his dream job, he revealed, wasn't being the best or winning the most awards, it was simply always saying "YES!" to new opportunities. At Middle Campus, Hale conducted a workshop with our 6th graders, guiding them through a project in character and story creation.
