This summer, Helena Merk ’17 is in northern Madagascar with eight of her fellow Duke University engineers. Together, they are installing a clean water distribution pipeline of their own design. The goal of this project is to provide clean water access to each of the approximately four-hundred households (~1,000 villagers) who are currently drinking contaminated water. Before embarking on her trip, Helena walked thirteen miles with twenty-five kilos of water strapped to her back, raising awareness about the long distances women and children in this region make every day to fetch water.
