The computer science & engineering (CS&E) curriculum prepares students for the 21st century by providing foundational knowledge, concepts, and critical thinking skills in a project-based learning environment. Students engage in active learning through collaborative and individual projects. Knowledge, concepts, reflections, problem-solving, and analytical skills are emphasized in all classes. Digital citizenship, digital footprint, content creation and curation, coding, and programming are key components of the curriculum. In addition to the required CS&E courses in seventh, eighth, and ninth grades, electives for upperclassmen are offered to challenge advanced students.

The English curriculum provides dedicated writing and literature classes, allowing students to explore both areas with greater depth. Literature courses cover poetry, drama, short stories, and novels, ranging from classical to contemporary works. Writing courses focus intensively on composition strategies, grammar skills, and vocabulary development. Students practice crafting sophisticated, varied, and expressive sentences, cogent paragraphs, and clear, insightful essays across multiple modes. Years of engagement in both writing and literature courses give students a strong foundation to meet the reading and writing demands of college.

From Algebra 1A/B to AP Calculus BC and AP Statistics, the math curriculum emphasizes computational accuracy, mathematical communication, and real-world applications. Through technology-based instruction, traditional lectures, cooperative learning, self-discovery, student-led presentations, and engaging real-life problem solving, students develop a deep understanding of concepts and critical thinking skills. At every level, the math department fosters an academically focused, supportive, and appropriately challenging environment, empowering students to reach their fullest potential and preparing them for future studies in mathematics.

The goal of the physical education program is to engage students in a variety of activities that contribute to developing a positive attitude toward physical fitness and a lifelong habit of healthy living. Through fitness activities and individual and team sports, Pinewood’s physical education classes help foster self-confidence, sociability, teamwork, and sportsmanship. In addition to the required physical education courses, Pinewood encourages all students to participate in the school’s interscholastic athletics program.

The science curriculum is designed to develop strong analytical, critical thinking, and scientific skills. Students progress through rigorous courses, beginning with two years of life and earth sciences in junior high, followed by at least three years of high school science, including physics, chemistry, and biology. Pinewood also offers a variety of science electives and Advanced Placement courses. Every science course engages students in active learning through regular labs, group activities, field trips, science writing, experimental design, projects, and reading.

The history and social studies curriculum is designed to give students a deep understanding of contemporary domestic and global issues, alongside the historical forces that have shaped the present. It also prepares students for college by emphasizing research, writing, and critical thinking skills. Courses provide a strong foundation in United States History, World History, and United States Government, with teachers consistently connecting historical material to current events. Students learn to conduct research using primary and secondary sources, write research and thesis papers with proper documentation, and refine their debate, presentation, and analytical skills. Project-based learning and service learning opportunities are key components of many history and social studies courses.

The Performing Arts and the Visual Art and Design programs are dedicated to nurturing competent, confident musicians, artists, and communicators. Theater and music classes offer students numerous opportunities to engage in onstage performances as actors, musicians, singers, dancers, or as members of the technical support team. Students can participate in full-stage plays, musical performances, and even tour with Pinewood’s award-winning choirs. The visual arts curriculum encourages experimentation, helping young artists express their unique voices, develop proficiency in various media, and gain an appreciation for both art history and contemporary art.

Pinewood's world languages curriculum centers on fostering an appreciation of world cultures, offering students the chance to become proficient in French, Mandarin, or Spanish. Students learn that effective communication is key to understanding, relating to, and respectfully engaging with other cultures. To achieve this, total language immersion is practiced at every level, with students encouraged to use their language skills both in and out of school to deepen their knowledge and broaden their cultural experiences. The goal of the world languages program is to prepare students to successfully communicate in French, Mandarin, or Spanish, equipping them to be thoughtful, engaged citizens in an increasingly interconnected global society.

• Our counselors meet individually with students to provide support on an as-needed basis, helping them thrive socially, emotionally, and academically.
• Counselors can provide referrals for outside mental health services or communicate with outside providers to ensure continuity of care.
• Parent consultation and parenting support are available to address the mental health needs of students.
• Students can schedule regular meetings with the counselor or drop in for appointments as needed.

• World Language Workshop: Provides extra support for world language classes, including make-up assessments and assignments.
• English Workshop: Offers help with critical thinking, reading, and writing.
• Math Lab: Provides support for math-related work, including preparation for assessments.

• The Director of Upper Campus Learning Support and the Academic Support Specialist at Upper Campus assist students facing challenges in areas like studying, exam prep, note-taking, time management, and organization.
• Support is available for students with mild learning differences, helping them access their accommodations as needed.
• Students can schedule regular meetings with the Director of Upper Campus Learning Support as well as make drop-in appointments as needed.
• Students can meet with the Academic Support Specialist throughout the day and after school.

Once a week, students have the opportunity to meet with teachers during designated office hours, allowing them to ask questions, study, and collaborate with peers under teacher guidance.

Conferences are held as needed throughout the year. Parents will be contacted to arrange a meeting if necessary, but they can also request a conference at any time by contacting the office, teacher, or administration directly.

A dedicated space where students can meet with the learning specialist, collaborate with peers, or study independently. The center is open to all students.

Many teachers offer informal tutoring throughout the day, and some are available for paid tutoring sessions after school. Arrangements and fees are handled directly with the teacher.

Students attending Pinewood School from 9th through 12th grade are expected to complete the courses listed below. Students entering the school after the 9th grade will be expected to meet as many of these requirements as possible, depending on scheduling and the approval of the academic committee.

Courses are weighted according to academic challenge. All college preparatory classes receive 1.5 units per semester, while physical education and some electives receive 0.5 units. Student schedules are based on grade level, fulfillment of graduation requirements, availability of classes, and student request. The minimum high school course load is six classes each semester, or five classes if a student is taking three or more AP classes.
