Derek Amanatullah '94

Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, Stanford

During his time at Pinewood, Derek was captain of the inaugural baseball team, a member of the National Honor Society, president of the ASB, and the valedictorian of his class. He now serves as both an associate professor of orthopaedic surgery and a specialist in arthritis and joint replacement at Stanford. Derek fondly recalls Laurie Eickmeier's English class, which, although challenging, helped him develop the essential communication skills he still relies on today as the lead author of over three hundred medical publications.

After fellowships at Harvard and Stanford, Sarina recently launched her own clinical psychology and performance coaching practice. “What I
love about Pinewood's literature and humanities education is that it got me to ask big questions early on, like, 'What does success mean beyond good grades? What does it mean to be a good person? It turns out I love the pursuit of big questions, and I feel really lucky that Pinewood started me on this big-thinking journey, and that in my career I can help individuals navigate these big questions.”
