Mr. Carter discovered his passion for education in the late '70s when he taught gymnastics and worked as a teacher's aide in a middle school special education class. After earning his B.A. in Drama Education and a Single Subject Teaching Credential in English from San Francisco State University, Tom taught English, drama, speech, and math for a total of sixteen years at both public and private schools. In 1989, he earned an M.A. in Music Theatre from San Jose State University, after which he enjoyed eight years as artistic director of the City of Los Altos Youth Theatre. He continued directing and teaching at Woodside Priory School, leaving in 2004 to write the book, Choral Charisma: Singing with Expression. Since its publication, Tom has worked with choirs around the country and presented clinics at state, regional, and national choral conventions. Tom is absolutely thrilled to be teaching English at Pinewood, a position he has enjoyed since 2012.
