# Algebra 1

## Course Description

Algebra 1 is a rigorous course that covers many fundamental skills and concepts required for all subsequent math courses. The course develops the skills needed to solve problems while emphasizing the many structured ways to arrive at the solution. Students learn to read, write, verbalize, and conceptualize algebraic concepts.

## Major Goals and Objectives

In Algebra 1, students will:

- write and simplify variable expressions using the Order of Operations
- learn and apply the properties of Real Numbers
- learn and apply the properties of Equality
- simplify, factor and determine the roots and nature of the roots of quadratics
- understand and use three main forms of linear functions
- simplify and solve using irrational numbers

## Prerequisites

- Algebra 1 is intended for those students who have not yet taken a high school Algebra 1 course, or did not receive a grade of 70% or above in a prior Algebra 1 course

## Advancement

- students who achieve at a 70% or above in Algebra 1 advance to Geometry
