Pinewood encourages all students to participate in Pinewood School’s interscholastic athletics program. At the junior high school level (grades 7-8) students have the chance to become a member of a competitive team. Historically, 85% of the students are members of at least one team. High school (grades 9-12) sports are competitive and may require a tryout for a specific team. At least 70% of the student body participates on at least one competitive sports team. Over the years we have competed at the league, section, and state levels.
Schedules for Practices and Games
Practice and game scheduling is a complicated endeavor that involves league facilities, inter-school communication, and other resource considerations. Junior High teams will meet three to four (3-4) times per week for practices and games. High School teams may meet up to six (6) times per week. Practice is mandatory; it is a time for the team to become a cohesive unit, and this is a valuable part of the program. Practice schedules are available well in advance, so families can schedule appointments, tutoring, etc. All game schedules are posted on the main athletic calendar and individual team pages.
It is the responsibiity of all players and parents to ensure that there is a full commitment to the team during the entire season. Communication is of the utmost importance when a practice or game commitment cannot be upheld.
All junior high and high school practices and home games take place in the Upper Campus gymnasium. In addition, our High school teams may also practice at Pinewood School’s Activity Center on Fabian Way in Palo Alto. Practice times and game schedules are dependent on availability of the facilities, which are split to serve both the high school and junior high teams. The Athletic Director will make schedules available as soon as they are determined.
Pinewood participates in the competitive West Bay Athletic League (WBAL). The league consists of thirteen private schools stretching from San Jose to San Francisco. Games are played both at home and away; home games are hosted at Pinewood School's Upper Campus.
At the junior high level, Pinewood typically fields one team per sport. Basketball and volleyball may have two teams depending on sign-ups; those teams will be delineated by skill, as A and B teams. Grade has very little bearing on an A or B team as athletes are placed in the best position to grow, improve, and play as much as possible.
High school varsity and JV teams are typically non-cut unless there are a large number of athletes signing on for the sport. In general, Pinewood tries to accommodate all interested students.
Coaches and Parent Volunteers
At the junior high level, we move away from parent coaches. We hire qualified coaches for each sport and let the parents spectate and cheer. Parent volunteers are still very much appreciated to help with transportation, team gatherings, and occasionally taking stats.
