Music theory 1
Course Description
This one-semester course is designed to give students a basic view of music theory and practice. The course will contain both lectures and activities, following the textbook in chronological order beginning with note reading and advancing to basic harmonic analysis and composition. Students will also learn the basics of keyboards and complete supplemental theory and ear training activities using keyboards and Mac computers. At the end of the semester, students will complete a comprehensive final exam that will include secions on vocabulary, composition, analysis, and listening exercises.

Major Goals and Objectives
In Music Theory 1, students will:
- be introduced to the basic building blocks of music composition, technique, and musicianship
- be introduced to music as not only a form of expression, but as a
system of symbols and rules that are very similar to other academic
disciplines
- use technology in the classroom to compose, study, and learn about music
- receive a foundation in keyboards/piano
- improve dictation skills through ear training
- be prepared to be sucessful in Music Theory 2
Advancement
- following completion of this course, students will take Music Theory 2
