AP Physics Takes Flight

This week, our AP Physics students applied their lessons on Newton's laws of motion by traveling to iFLY in Union City. After an introductory lesson on aerodynamics by iFLY's STEM instructor, each student experienced two one-minute flights in the air tunnel at speeds up to 120mph. Once everyone was back on solid ground, the students learned about the mechanisms of the building as well as detailed physics concepts of their flight.

The entire experience built on class material dealing with various force interactions during free fall, including drag coefficient, surface area, and air density. This allowed them fully understand the physics behind the experience. The AP students used complex calculus methods to derive practical terminal velocities in class, and were introduced to introductory fluid dynamics at iFLY.
