Beginning an Adventure in Reading

This week, our Kindergarten class ventured to the Los Altos Library. Lynn Chronis, Kindergarten Language Arts instructor says that the annual trip marks "the beginning of an adventure in reading." Our students began with story time and songs with the librarian. Next stop was the library's Children's Room for a tour and introduction to the many things that the library offers: fiction and non-fiction, audiobooks, e-books, magazines, and more. The final highlight of the day for parents and students alike was getting a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the library's mechanized check-out process.

Our K-6 Language Arts Curriculum
The Language Arts curriculum develops a mastery of skills in literature, conventions (grammar, spelling, vocabulary), and writing. Daily oral reading in small groups with the teacher provides training in reading accuracy, meaningful expression, and comprehension skills. Students learn principles and components of English grammar as it is essential for writing skills as well as for comprehension of spoken and written language. The foundations of reading, spelling, vocabulary, and grammar instruction culminate in the writing program. Students understand each stage of the writing process and gain the capacity to work diligently on every phase of creating a fine written piece through studying and practicing the Six Traits of Writing.

Lynn Chronis was drawn to the teaching profession after being influenced by many wonderful elementary teachers growing up. She earned a B.A., Liberal Studies and a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential (Life) from California State University, Chico. She first came to Pinewood in 1978 and taught for eight years then returned in 2007 to teach Kindergarten Language Arts. She continues to attend children's literature workshops when possible and loves to keep up with researching the newest in children's literature. Mrs. Chronis and her husband, Peter, have three grown children, all of whom attended Pinewood School. Her hobbies include hiking, golfing, swimming and reading.
